Humane Ai Pin: A Hands-On Experience at MWC 2023
The buzz surrounding the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2023 in Barcelona was palpable, and amidst the throngs of attendees, I stumbled upon a hidden gem – the elusive yet intriguing creation from a company called ‘Humane’.
Humane’s presence at MWC wasn’t marked by a grand booth or a flashy display. Instead, their team of engineers and designers had strategically positioned themselves within the spaces of partner companies like SK Telecom and Qualcomm. This unique approach allowed them to engage in engaging demonstrations, showcasing their flagship product, the Ai Pin, to curious onlookers.
As I navigated the vibrant halls of MWC, I encountered two of these demonstrators, Sai Kambampati and Liz Dorman. They roamed the show floor, engaging in friendly competitions with other brands, comparing the capabilities of their AI device to those of their rivals.
Intrigued, I joined them for a hands-on experience with the Ai Pin. Kambampati posed a question to the device: “How many people attend Mobile World Congress?” The response came swiftly, with the Pin delivering an accurate figure after a brief search of the web.
The Pin’s voice commands were impressive, responding promptly to our queries. Whether it was fact-checking information or seeking directions, the device delivered consistent and informative answers. However, one aspect that could be improved is the volume of the built-in audio. The need for an additional speaker hinted at potential limitations in this area.
What truly sets the Ai Pin apart is its Laser Ink Display, which projects information onto the user’s raised palm. This feature adds a touch of futuristic flair to the device, transforming the user’s body into a digital interface. The projection was bright and clear, and the 3D sensor ensured that the display remained centered, even as the demonstrator’s hands moved.
Despite the impressive features, I couldn’t help but wonder how the Ai Pin would integrate with my daily life. At a price point of $699 and a monthly subscription fee of $24, the value proposition might be challenging for many consumers.
However, the seamless interactions with the Ai Pin in situations where context is crucial are undeniable. Imagine being able to ask for directions, currency conversions, or nearby amenities without the hassle of pulling out your phone. The device’s potential in these scenarios is undeniable.
Overall, my experience with the Ai Pin at MWC 2023 was a mix of awe and intrigue. While the device showcases impressive capabilities, its long-term viability remains uncertain. Only time will tell if the market will embrace this innovative wearable technology.
