Displace TV: A Revolutionary Wireless Display with Enhanced Features
At CES 2023, Displace, a pioneering hardware company, unveiled the ‘Display Flex’, a groundbreaking 55-inch wireless 4K OLED TV that adheres to walls without the need for conventional mounting. This innovative product generated immense excitement, and recently, I had the opportunity to connect with Displace’s founder and CEO, Balaji Krishna, at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. He shared exciting news about upcoming models and intriguing new AI features.
Expanding the Displace Lineup: Introducing the ‘Display Mini’
Displace is expanding its product portfolio with the ‘Display Mini’, a compact 27-inch TV designed for smaller spaces like kitchens or bathrooms. This versatile display offers the same wireless and adhesive capabilities as its larger counterpart, making it an ideal solution for various settings.
AI-Powered Shopping and Contactless Payments: Enhancing User Experience
Krishna hinted at exciting new features in the works for Displace devices. These include an “AI-powered shopping engine” that allows viewers to seamlessly purchase products featured in advertisements. Additionally, a contactless payment reader will be integrated, enabling convenient transactions without the need for physical contact.
Health Applications: Thermal Camera with Potential Benefits
Displace devices will also feature a built-in thermal camera with potential health applications. This camera can read body heat maps, potentially detecting inflammation and other health issues. However, it’s important to note that these features are still under development, and their availability may vary depending on the model and region.
Shipping and Pre-Orders: Mid-Year Fulfillment
Krishna revealed that Displace temporarily halted pre-orders after CES to focus on fulfilling existing orders. Shipments are expected to commence mid-year. The company has also made significant design changes and simplifications, including reducing the weight of the display.
Series A Fundraising and Target Market
Displace is planning a “small series A” fundraising round of $5 million. Krishna mentioned that the company has received considerable interest from art studios, museums, and even embassies. While traditional TV setups suffice for most consumers, businesses seeking flexible mounting options, including walls and windows, have shown keen interest in Displace’s products.
Innovative Technology: Vacuum Suction and Swappable Batteries
The Displace TV employs a vacuum suction system for secure attachment, even on dry walls. Swappable batteries power the screen, eliminating the need for unsightly cables. Content is streamed wirelessly from a base station, similar to LG’s OLED M.
Adhesion and Safety Features: 10-Month Battery Life and Zipline Descent
The Display Flex can adhere to ceramic and glass surfaces and remains attached for up to 10 months using its vacuum system. In case of a power failure, the screen gradually lowers itself using a zipline-like mechanism, ensuring a safe descent from the wall.
